Live Green Below Your Means
CNN reports that today, the richest 20 percent of people consume 86 percent of everything that is sold for private consumption. The poorest 20 percent consume 1 percent of it.
The Live Green Below Your Means concept is created by a great group of people at
New American Dream who confront the notion that “more is better”. Like these folks, I challenge you to not only consume less than you can afford, but to think about your response
to the pressures of our contemporary culture:
- Before you buy something, ask yourself not only if you really need it, but how it will enrich your life, your family’s, your neighbors and the planet.
- Are you following the present day notion of success out of fear? You go to a good school, get a well paying job, so you can buy a nice car, then you find a suitable mate, get married, buy a nice house, have kids, send them to a good school…
Are you complying with this formula out of the fear that you will disappoint your parents, partner, friends, teacher, boss, and neighbors?
- Is there a discrepancy between what you are doing now and what you feel you should be doing?
-And while you can save a lot of money by living green below your means, consider how you can also add to your happiness future as well. Doing good by yourself, your community and the environment has a measurable impact on a person’s sense of well being.
